Why Overthinking is Killing Your Gains

Why Overthinking is Killing Your Gains

In today's age of social media information overload, it's easy to get caught up in the minutiae of fitness. Questions like, “Is this the most effective joint angle?” or “What’s the best stretch for this exercise?” are everywhere. While studies on "optimal" techniques can be helpful, they shouldn't distract from the fundamental truth: training hard and staying consistent are key.

Why Training Hard Matters

    1. Effort Over Perfection: Training hard means pushing your limits and challenging your body. It’s about the intensity and effort you bring to each session, not just the weights you lift.
    2. Avoid Overthinking: Don’t get lost in overanalyzing every detail of your movements. The most important factor is consistently giving your best effort.
  • Old-School Grit: The older generation of lifters might not have had all the data, but they understood the value of giving their all. Combining this "train to failure" mindset with modern techniques can yield effective, safe, and sustainable results.
  • The Power of Consistency

    • Consistency Beats Perfection: It can be stressful trying to find the best workout split for your personal goals on your own, but in searching for the most “optimal” routine, we can forget that even the best workout plan won't work if you’re inconsistent. Regular training builds both mental and physical discipline and habit, which are essential for long-term success.
    • Stick to What Works: The perfect plan is the one you can stick to. It’s more effective to follow a simple plan consistently than to frequently switch routines.

    Tips to Stay on Track

    • Set Realistic Goals: Focus on small, achievable milestones rather than perfection. Keeping track of smaller goals that can be achieved while still working towards your “main” goal can keep you progressing without feeling stagnant.
    • Track Your Progress: Take progress photos often or keep a written log to stay motivated and see your improvements over time.
    • Prioritize Recovery: Listen to your body and adapt when necessary to balance hard work with proper recovery. Your progress can only be held back by preventable injuries.

    The Bottom Line

While optimizing workouts is beneficial, remember that consistency and hard work are what truly drive progress. Don’t get bogged down by trying to find the "perfect" plan. Instead, focus on what you can maintain, challenge yourself, and trust in the process.
